Roots

i.

I remember the nights where I remained
alone with my thoughts
behind enemy lines,
when others shared stories of days
I just didn't exist.

I share moments with a family
I don't belong to because I am not
myself
when I see them.

Where am I?

Underneath the roses
where the soil is damp and
impressionable

Do you know me?
No,
I never knew you to begin with.

ii.

I remember the rains of summer
the rains of spring
but I cannot remember the last time
I smiled
and spent an entire day in the sun.
When I was carefree and
naive
and memories didn't matter because children
live for the moment.

Now I have days I can remember
but that I wish I couldn't
Where am I?

Underneath the lilies where the soil
is damp and the worms
crawl through my memories and leave holes

Do you know me?
No,
you are not the person I thought you were.

iii.

I remember running down train tracks
unsure of where to turn
because there was no end and I couldn't
remember the beginning.
When all the trees looked the same
as if I were stuck in a cycle on the scene
of a child's drawing.

Pictures sit within my eyes of things
I have never seen, and have yet to
paint, so I can't remember
them.

Where am I?
Under the strawberry bush where
the roots of my mind are crushed
by red

Do you know me?
No,
You are lost to me.
