Fiercely loyal and startlingly beautiful

She is quiet in corners where no one listens.
She has long fingers and gazes at them while she sits,
face hidden in shadows. She likes the smell
of old books and old basements and
old lovers.

The daffodils refuse to bloom in the places
she planted them. Dirt beneath her fingernails
and what does she have to show for it?

Ending things is easy, she thinks.
Death, and change, and all those other
silly things--how quickly they gain control.
How quickly control is lost.

Sometimes it is simply not enough,
sometimes sun and water and earth are not enough
and your flowers do not bloom.
This she knows, has always known, will always know.
But sometimes knowing is simply not enough.
