You were almost crying

Breakfast at 9:30,
At 9:32 arrived.
Found you waiting
At the table
Tired look in your eyes.
Poured some coffee for me
As we made our order, then
We talked about all sorts of things
About our lives, again.
The question that I asked you
Which troubled you the most
Was "Do you think you and mom will ever get back together?"
To which you replied; "I don't think so."
I had no expectations,
In fact I'd been prepared,
To hear you choke up across from me
And say what my thoughts had never dared.
Now I understand that this
Is how it's going to be.
You were almost crying there
And you must know what that means to me.
I will think on all these things
And never shed a tear.
Haven't yet at least,
But that could always change some time later this year.

Oh, divirced parents. A story I know well.
This was almost sweet, in such a sad way.
    Good luck in my contest!

  • Touching.
