Bourbon Street Canticle

There was a whiskey moon in the sky tonight
Lighting faces passing from dark into the light
Following their dreams answering to the call
Beneath pale lamplights some broken and all
With a silent prayer on each and every lip
Scurrying like ants and under the whip
They danced to a tune that moved to a beat
Along these sad sidewalks along Bourbon Street

As the years came and went I did what I could
Trapped by naked ambition it was all knock on wood
I did what I did, I know what I am
A wolf in sheep's clothing; no innocent lamb
The tattoes I wore were faded and creased
I had the heart of a dove and the eye of the beast
As I danced and I ran along to that beat
Along these sad sidewalks along Bourbon Street

Now I'm trapped by convention it's now who I am
I'm a wolf in sheep's clothing and no innocent lamb
I was caught by convention that's just how it goes
It shows in my stature and all through my clothes
And if you believe  that your god is all love
You haven't walked in my shoes to where I'm thinking of
Without rhyme or reason where you can't stand the heat
Along these sad sidewalks along old Bourbon Street

Author notes

canticle - (from the Latin canticulum, a diminutive of canticum, song) is a hymn (strictly excluding the Psalms) taken from the Bible. The term is often expanded to include ancient non-biblical hymns such as the Te Deum and certain psalms used liturgically

"Don't die live life"

I really enjoyed this piece. I grew up on Bourbon street so the title caught my eye in a heart beat. That and I wrote up hot sticky muggy summers in New Orleans for this same contest. I love this piece though. Its just fantastic, and maybe because I can see it so very clear in my minds eye it just speaks, no, yells right out to me. Wonderful job here, just wonderful.

Please put the form in the AN. I don't believe this is a canticle. If I'm wrong feel free to tell me.

this is a very unique piece. it is in a catergory all its own. you read it and you want to sing it. it has the sorrow revealed in an old spiritual and the urge to sing it over again and again overwhelms you. this is very well done. my best to you in the contest.

  • I was just sitting here reading/singing this song of yours!
I am very impressed. You have some very unique lines too.
    I really liked:
"As the years came and went I did what I could
Trapped by naked ambition it was all knock on wood"

    and:
"I did what I did, I know what I am
A wolf in sheep's clothing no innocent lamb
The tattoes I wore were faded and creased
I had the heart of a dove and the eyes of the beast"
