I Can and I Am

I Can and I Am

There came a flicker of flame when I was small,
an introduction, as it were, of Christ's good things to bloom;
yet, as part of God's plan, there were times to fall,
to learn His wisdom and knowledge as I roamed sin-filled rooms
to find me as sinner before I'd stand tall,
to gain strength in forthrightly speaking His Truths with aplomb.
'Til then, the weak flame cast shadows oh so small.

I can, I can, I can— become that unquenched flame.
I can, I can, I can— shed light on God's great Name!
I can— never allow sin to smother His flame.

Praise the Lord! The day came when that flame steadied,
increased its intensity o'er my past dejected life;
my sins healed, I stood tall, my spirit readied.
Now, I boldly embrace the past, present and future strife,
what Satan throws at me of his vile eddy
as I share God's gifts to me that glint on Satan's sharp knife:
lethal to flesh but not my spirit steadied.

I am, I am, I am— that unquenchable flame.
I am, I am, I am— shedding light on God's Name!
I am— not allowing sin to smother His flame.

So saith the Lord,
"Will you turn I can't . . .  to I can . . .  to I am?"
