DEAREST LOVE

I received your lovely card,
and so sad I'M not a bard
To express my love that is true
to a beautiful sweetheart like you.

Although we're far apart
You are always in my heart
And hope this war will end
so my life with you I'll spend

Your birthday card was swell
And I loved it very well.
i hope this time next year
I'll whisper love words in your ear.

For tonight, goodnight my love,
And please pray to heaven above
That i'll be home with you,
To share our love that's true

Darling, I made this little poem just for you
I hope you like it very much,
it's the only way I can express my love.
Well darling,
I haven't much more to say,
Will write a letter to you tomorrow, lots of love
and
MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS

LOVE
FRANK

ITALY, jUNE 14, 1944
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HONEY, WITH LOTS OF LOVE AND MAY WE BE TOGETHER FOR YOUR NEXT ONE.
GIFT IS FROM ROME. I HOPE YOU LIKE IT
WITH LOVE

(FRANK)

Author notes

i am archiving our family history in chronological, alphabetical, and historically and came across a poem by my dad. I remember he would rhyme something and joke, "i'm a poet and i don't know it".
I always wondered why i write such quality poetry, essays, narratives and i've loved writing and poetry since i was a kid.
Funny, i copied the format of his work exactly, with the envelope, etc, and my verse is true to his format, style, etc. in some respects. So, i must have got it from my dad.
one more thing, his dream came true: the war ended, he was home for her next birthday, "to share our love that's true", and "so my life with you i'll spend"
as in
F.... and A......... true love 4 ever
(as they used to post on the inside of phonebooth back then, (no internet)

please comment honesty, if you will

  • This is great.

    Keep it up.

  • ps. About our Date...

    ...is June 14th, 1944 not a significant WW2 date?

I trust the man made it home, and the author;s notes do not relate such. (And woder if they be not part of a facsimile, but of verity)

  • Great To See; however...

...should not the adresses be switched in their places? (If that is what the original has, fair enough, but as I understand it the addressee stands above and the sender of to one side, at least in English formatting - Americans may do it different for all I know.)

As for the content, rhyming may no poet make, but as for love, that seems not fake.

    oh, by the way..

...like the previous critiquer, I didn't understand from your less than specific author notes who actually wrote the above - but whoever did, it's IMHO simplistic bollocks!

    In your auther notes...

you 'say' "I always wondered why I write such quality poetry, essays, narratives..."
Surely it's not for YOU to describe your work as "quality".
I thought it was arrogance personified, so I clicked on your home page to read several of these "quality" pieces and, lo and behold, everything I read, including this above, was, in my opinion, a "crock of shit"!

I'm not certain what this is. Is it a copy of something someone wrote 65 years ago? Or is it your version of it? Or what? Fact is stranger than fiction I suppose.

A nice job with this one, this is a fine letter poem, Robert Frost has a few of these, though written usually in a letter format, this is a fine bit of free-verse. Nicely done. You have come a long way.
this is a sweet poem. I will Im you my only other thoughts on it. Well done, Bravo.
