Aussie Bushfires…..Wyleian Sonnet CCXLIV
Though the full fire-fighting forces were deployed,
those recent Aussie bushfires have destroyed
a thousand homes, it’s said, and at least two hundred dead
from the heat they were unable to avoid.
On a smaller scale, the same thing happens here
with campers lighting campfires every year.
Fire-fighters battle blazes which our native bush erases
and, of arsonists, we also have our share.
But our PM says: “Australians, don’t despair.
We’ll send a hundred firemen over there
and our massive heli-flyer will pour water on your fire
or, if that runs short, they’ll put it out with beer!"
Though at footy we, as Kiwis, may deride you,
in a tragedy like this, we’re right beside you!

Author notes
I thought I'd try this new Sonnet form Sonnetto Limerico invented by my friend Hugh who is currently experimenting with mixed meters and internal rhyming.

Dear Heath,
It's been a very sad time in Australia, to lose so many people in one day is something we've never experienced before, the closest one I can remember was the Granville Rail disaster where eighty three lives were lost thirty years ago. The rebuilding of lives still goes on in the Victorian fires, I have not seen any names posted yet of the lives lost.
I like the new style Sonnetto Limerico that Hugh has invented, it's very easy to follow.
Beautifully written dear nephew

Dear Heathcote,
This is a fitting use of my new Sonnetto Limerico form which combines sonnet and limerick characteristics
and which is a worthy addition to the Wyleian Anthology.
That it is a reminder of the tragic devastation in Victoria especially and of our comradeship with Aussie rivals in times of tragedy makes your poem a worthy subject for inclusion in the corpus.
Congratulations on and applause for a well-crafted piece.
Thankyou for not entering it in a contest.
Love, Hugh.
