No one told me
at sixteen
that marriage is
a gilded cage.
Happy
young and free
I thought marriage was
the answer for me.
Walked down the aisle
young soldier at my side,
It would be just after that
I learned to cry.
The cage shut slowly
but come they did,
first - no family
no friends, just him.
Next was the money,
his to control
I wanted to leave
but he wouldn't let go.
The children came
one, two, three, four
"you can't make it alone"
responsibility loked the door.
Ten years of hell
and locked within
forgetting who I was
just serving him.
One winter night
a plan to leave.
He cleaned his guns
and said, "Alright, we'll see."
No one told me
at sixteen
that marriage
is a gilded cage.
