Lucretia

Time spoilt child in luxury reared
her need for power grew
The girl in the mirror disappeared
as she formed herself anew

Her heart was as an apothecaries vial
her ornate exterior full of death
long autumn gold hair that shines like sun
and whispered lies on every breath

Her perfume draws them all to sleep
like heady music’s soft embrace
the last long moment before the black
is filled with the beauty of her face

Each marriage vow would crypt invite
each kiss bring graveyard near
each rumour carefully chosen to bite
with deep and darkened fear

Her hauntingly beautiful rosebud smile
and sensuous smoky eyes
would hide the cruel games she plays
to aid her family’s rise

Long, long lashes black as night
Placates the broken heart
She damns his soul with soft caress
perfection in her art

And every lovers tears are dried
to hear the night bird sing
smiling sweetly as she slips
the poison in her ring

Yet when the scandal broke it’s bands
and rumours tale was told
she played the mask of Duchess sweet
in charity's heart of gold

Author notes

The picture I chose:
http://www.satanspace.com/m_pictures/untitled-26.jpg

It reminded me of this poem I wrote about the evil beauty Lucretia Borgia.
The history books have little proof that she actually was this evil beauty, but I decided to write from the legend rather than water her down into what might be a more bland reality.

I like this, it gives an almost 'Twilight" twist to this old tale
of lust and murder. I can almost see her fangs.

The entire poem works to set a mood of sinister mystery, you make the woman come alive again (is that a good thing?)

    Very nice

    thanks for entering

      Hi Ariosto!
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. Yes, she is indeed a lady of the twillight. Her legend is so strong that she is kept alive by our incredulity at her wickedness. Your contest was inspiring, thank you.
