Old Men's yarns

The old men on the seat tell stories by the score.
Underneath the bar room window ,close by the open door

They sit there every weekday, twinkles in their eyes.
A trap for unwary travellers who may be stopping by.

I love to hear the yarns they spin, fair dinkum so they say;
I wonder what is true, and what has fictions sway

No one has the time to check,no records are at hand,
but these old folks made history when they were on the land.

The pace of life has speeded up, left them in its wake.
They need to have their stories told, for all our future's sakes.

There's nothing new on this earth, it has all been done before.
Yet we have not learned enough from those days of yore.

Author notes

In the more remote areas there is always one or two old men in the Pub or on the Pub verandah, who will tell stories all day for a refill of whatever they are drinking. I wonder how much is the truth and how much is pure fiction. Either way, they are entertaining if you have the time to stop, and listen.

I couldn't have said better myself. So much of what, we as a culture, have experienced will never see the light of day. The younger generations are far too busy, sadly, to stop and listen. A damn good write and a great read. Happy trails Bob and HiYo Silver away.

You do realise, David, that you and I are fast becoming the "old men" of this poem. What we have stored in our memories is already priceless. Many thanks for your support my friend.

  • Yep...you are absolutely right Bob There is a regular here at the pub who I reckon would have to be 150 years old to have done all he reckons he's done
He's well know for spinning many a tall story and I think he's the only one who believes 'em
Great write Bob. Indeed there are many who tell TRUE stories and they are so very interesting to have a chat with

Thanks for your comments Julie. Even the stories that are made up are so entertaining. But there is always an element of truth in all their yarns. I would love to be able to remember even half the ones I have heard.

Thank you for enjoying this poem. I have worked and lived in many rather remote places for many years and the old men are always there somewhere, ready to tell stories from their experiences. 'Tis a shame thay so many woderful yarns will disappear from the world as they pass on.
