a man graced this planet
who was made of something
incredible;
a strength of character
that's rarely seen today.
He stood up
when nobody else would.
He fought for something
that most fought against
starting a movement
that grew from a single street
to overtake the Castro, and then
San Francisco!
Then the movement spread
to other states:
Florida, Oklahoma, Minnesota, New York
and more joined in...
Today the movement continues;
a global battle for human rights,
respect and dignity;
acceptance and inclusion.
An ordinary man,
gunned down,
and penniless at death
was rich in ways we should all
fight so hard to be.
He was the inspiration for
millions who,
in the face of great adversity
needed a leader;
a voice to guide them
from obscurity into clarity.
Let his life be a lesson!
that a single person CAN
change the world in
the greatest and most profound ways.
Let his life be a lesson!
to those still caught in
the trap of hate that they, too,
can rise, speak, and be heard!
Let his death
not be in vain!
Let his name
not be forgotten...
In memory of the much loved
Harvey Bernard Milk
May 22, 1930 - November 27, 1978
Foe to none!
Friend to everyone.
Author notes
As I watched Milk the other night I remembered studying Harvey Milk not too long ago, and I remember thinking...I want to be like him. Everything I do I try and do as he did or would have done. He is posthumously just as much an inspiration as he was in life.
The Gay, Lesbian, Bi, and Transgender community owe a lot to Harvey, and I feel that he needs to be remembered. Had he never lived it is possible that the Rights Movement would have never come to be, or at least not as soon as it did.
