A rotted apple in the orchard
lying on the ground one scorcher
of a day shuffled away -
I hardly could believe my – hey!
Hey, Mommy, look – that apple took
a step or two – oh no – it's who?
A prickly baby hedgehog – Quick!
Come lookie, Mommy, look at it!
I picked it up, a small chestnut
still in its hull, prickles and all,
and underneath, it was so sweet -
its little padded dark brown feet –
its little tail – it had a tail!
It had its nose sharp set for snail –
it had no mother in its sight
though she was in the hedge that night
and looking for her errant one.
That baby hedgehog sure was fun!
lying on the ground one scorcher
of a day shuffled away -
I hardly could believe my – hey!
Hey, Mommy, look – that apple took
a step or two – oh no – it's who?
A prickly baby hedgehog – Quick!
Come lookie, Mommy, look at it!
I picked it up, a small chestnut
still in its hull, prickles and all,
and underneath, it was so sweet -
its little padded dark brown feet –
its little tail – it had a tail!
It had its nose sharp set for snail –
it had no mother in its sight
though she was in the hedge that night
and looking for her errant one.
That baby hedgehog sure was fun!
Author notes
we have had many encounters with these dear creatures as my photo shows, but none so exciting as the day we found the tiniest baby in the orchard and picked it up and looked at its underside.

I am embarrassed!
Everyone is writing adorable poems.
This one has a subject that is adorable and the poem itself is adorable. You certainly captured the excitement and wonderment of a small child.
In our backyard on the Range, my grandson runs in and says, "There's a big brown snake lying under the strawberry net."
Quite a difference. It is lovely in New Zealand. No snakes.
Thank you for your hedgehog poem. I liked it.

I've never seen a hedgehog, but if they're as you describe them, I'd like to see them in their native habitat -- which means I've have to go back to Europe some day.
Spring is sneaking up on Ohio.
