Forgiveness – Wyleian Sonnet CCXLI
The road of life is strewn with many boulders
which we must circumvent along the way
as each, himself, must bear on his own shoulders,
the stones which multiply from day to day.
Our life is far too short to carry grudges
when we’re already burdened with our load.
Why try to set ourselves apart as judges
of those who travel on the self-same road?
The only Judge of all, when life is ended,
is He Who, with His Son in Heaven above,
evaluates all those who have offended,
with understanding, clemency and love.
If we forgive each other while we live,
in Heaven, may God our trespasses forgive.
Hugh Wyles, February 25th. 2009.
Author notes
As we have helped to carry others’ burdens,
in life and death will we receive our guerdons.

~A Masterpiece in Poetry and Content~
Hugh your sonnet is a gift from the heavens above. I do agree with angelica I have known people that will not forgive, and they keep themselves bound to a darker place. Exquisite poetry, which I enjoyed reading today. Your image is brilliant and I just want to go out and hug someone right now, because of your heartfelt and spiritual words.

Dear Hugh,
We all have to forgive others as life is too short to bear grudges, although some do and they never forgive which is very sad, I have a friend like that who is always fighting with her family and her Brother she says she will NEVER speak to him again. When her time comes she will regret her actions, but I know God will forgive her.
The painting is magnificent and goes with this poem wonderfully. Well written and a credit to be added to your Wyleian Sonnets.

beautiful and true
Dear Hugh, your sonnet has uttered many truths, I have run into unforgiving people many times in my life, and I am totally in sympathy with your second quatrain. The third brings in the attitude of faith which is perfectly summed in the couplet. This is an excellent work, and I'm happy to see it added to the Wyleian sonnets.
"The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. "
Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice -
Beautiful poem and true words dad.
You do your sonnets so well, one day I'll try to write one again.
