Adapted from an old blues song (Sixteen Tons) with slight changes...
March the 9th
and what do I get?
Another year older
and deeper in debt.
St. Peter don't call
cos I can't go:
I owe my soul to
the mortgage company
the loan company
the car loan company
the oil company
the gas and electricity company
the tv, phone and internet company
the tv licensing board
the supermarkets
the road tax
the poll tax
the internal revenue
the vat
the strange system that lets the government take my money to buy a bank so that the bank can then lend my money back to me with interest
the strange effect that when a bank crashes all of your savings are lost but all of your debts still function perfectly
still, got tickets to go to the West Ham - Blackburn match so
mustn't grumble...

Marvellous!
I love it. I've heard of people taking verse and turning it into songs, but never this way around. Thanks for sharing. it made me smile...particularly that last line, which puts a nice spin on it, although it doesn't have the rhythmic feel of "Sixteen Tons". I'm going to have to go and listen to the song now. Great write! -
I know this song...
and I still sing it. You are always one to bring clever to verse. I loved this.
Excellent work.

great. how we make our life complicated, though, after all, it's all as simple as that.

-
well, at least you got something you wanted with your soul...this was very funny in a morbid sort of way...great job!
-
I know the original song well, liked your reprise of it.
Happy Birthday, anyway. Hope your team wins.

Nicely Done
"the strange system that lets the government take my money to buy a bank so that the bank can then lend my money back to me with interest
the strange effect that when a bank crashes all of your savings are lost but all of your debts still function perfectly"
I've never heard of the song it's adapted from, but I still really enjoyed those lines especially. A perfect example of the cynical world we live in today. Keep writing, and thanks for featuring your poem ( :

Provocative Piece
Darling I am not really familiar with the song that this work was inspired from but I think your muse was really working on this provocative piece how true that when all is said and done we lose no matter the game. They lose they get our money we lose they get our money we get money they still get a piece of the pie I say fire all of Washington put real people in to fill positions that need filled with accountants, business people etc. That can sort out the bull lets take back what is our country. I do hope darling in spite of it all you have a most lovely birthday your piece inspired this rant. Hope you liked it felt good to get it out…my heartfelt thank you darling for a great piece…

Superb Plus +
A great take off from Tennessee Ernie Ford's old song "Sixteen Ton's", I remember watching him on TV when he sang it, although others may also have recorded it. Thanks for sharing a very well written poem.

Amen! You summed it up wonderfully!
The sad frustrating facts of a government run by greedy imbeciles!

This could have been written in Latin by a citizen in ancient Rome; it seems nothing much changes!

Well done. The whole system is a mess established by those who write the laws who are paid by those who the laws are designed to regulate. Now we have a tax dodger in charge of the agency that collects taxes.
What a mess. Great job with this poem.
