Godproof.

'God is dead,' said Nietzche, and gone is our compliance
However Good the Book is, we only want for science
All semblance of worship died when we found we were not able
To fit Him in the Richter scale, or the Periodic Table
By Jove, Jehovah, haven't you been listening in History?
They're pulling down your Heaven, God, they do not want a mystery
O Father, Son and Shepherd, see how we try to name You
If You were a lion, we'd capture You and tame You
If You were an ocean, we'd let our children swim in You
If You were a dictionary, we'd come and stick a pin in You
If You were a mountain, we'd fetch our boots and climb You
If You were a minute, we'd get a watch and time You
If You were a flower, we'd happen by and pick You
If You were a frozen pole, some idiot would lick You
If You were a soldier, we'd send our best to fight You
But God, we're only human, we don't do it to spite You
So when the cynics question You, and ask You if You love us
And flood the sky with searchlights to find Heaven above us
Remember we are human, we only know the earth
And inherit confusion at the moment of our birth
We haven't learnt that sometimes you can't bottle the truth
And that Faith is undermined by our heart's enemy, Proof.

Author notes

I'm an agnostic, but I shift from side to side, one minute a fierce atheist, the next an uncertain theist.

  • Amazing. Wonderful. Clever. Witty. But that's enough about me. This is equally as good! Well done.

It is nice to encounter someone who knows what the difference between a theist and a Christian is. However: whichever way you look at it, the only intelligent course is to pray to the Tooth Fairy and the Great Pink Bunny in the Sky.

This is a fantastic write, as a gonstic and man of faith I took your words and saw them my own way. That God is everywhere, is part of us and we can't be blamed for wanting to 'see the wind'. This was a great poem, if you can spare a few moments I think you would enjoy this Poem I wrote, it fits with this... 'Like a Glove!'
