Lions, Tigers, Bears, Elephants and Donkeys

"Lions and tigers and bears, oh, my!"
The message of fear has been thrown out the door,
the yellow brick road directed left, not right as before.
"Intelligence, integrity, and honesty," onlookers sigh.

Books lie open, avidly read,
newspapers cover the desks, in plain sight,
TV news broadcasts morn through night,
thoughts exchanged, no fear of what is said.

"Lions and tigers and bears." Oh, no!
Nothing the same resides here
as "Yes, we can" is the cheer.
So much to do, so much to know!

Windows glow bright long into the night
in the house painted white, transformed
with a purpose to keep the country informed,
the people's business exposed to bright light.

"Lions and tigers and bears." not here,
as newcomers strive to undo the past,
to counter the mindless greed at last,
to balance the grim reality with cheer.

Hope bends his back, grays his hair
as the inspirational one moves quickly to change,
to undo the depths of errors of eight years range,
a monumental task to dare.

"Lions and tigers and bears," who is to blame?
Opposition stands firm, digging in elephant heels,
while the economy cries,  Wall Street reels,
the leader leads so the future will not ever be the same.

Donkeys and elephants still in combat.  Shame!
The people want no more of the same!

Author notes

Surely, it won't be the same....

"Lions, tigers and bears, oh my,"
from Wizard of Oz, Dorothy.

      Will do that, callie.
      Couldn't resist the reference here
      in this political rant!!

  • An astute perception.
Sadly, I find it hard to be optimistic in the face of human nature.

    Well-done

In light of all the disasterous circumstances
optimism may be the key with a new
      team in place!

  • Great write!

  • I think my verdict was erased. I think this is a clever piece that captures the essence of the goings on in the now political arena. Awesome job!

      Hey. T!

The prompt hung in my mind,
      refusing to go away.
      so,with the help of
      Dorothy's line, I had
      to set the words free.
      This is not the same!

      Thank you!

  • A Circus ...

The crowd shuffles in as the dust fills the air,
“popcorn, peanuts”, the man shouts from the stair
Three rings are decked out in red, white and blue
While so many people don‘t have the first clue.
A large, mirrored ball starts spinning around
rainbows start flying, when in come the clowns
With polka dots, stripes, three dogs and a pig
eight hula hoops and a big wooden keg,
which rolls ’cross the ground on big yellow wheels
ten monkeys climb out, while the little pig squeals
    … … … … and so on … … … … … …
The jugglers are tossing double-edged swords
as the ringmaster says a few more words.
The rest of the showmen come in single file
dressed in sequined clothes, wearing great big smiles!
And the band plays on - saved it’s best for last,
we’re all reminded of “how sweet was our past”,
For we never forgot the sights and the sounds
or the smells of what’s right while the hares chase the hounds.

Answered in kind with your imagery of the hill in mind!

      Fantastic, Joy!

I do believe I see a Bonko in there.

      Love your rhythm and rhyme,
      extending the theme, big time!

The color the pageantry, another big show,
this one challenged by all we know!

Thanks for creating and sharing your colorful piece!

"It's just not the same" the people have spoken looking for change. Long rough road ahead but there's hope in the tank, fueling the way to greener pastures.

That's exactly what I was illuding to in my comment.
Trying to move a sitting elephant takes a village. I think the townspeople are up for the task, getting up their chairs to let their elected officials know again what is really in their best interest. Already down from three rings to one ring in the political circus.

          dug in the first place!!

I like the fact that nothing has changed at the end- sad endings are satisfying.

This is a wonderful piece, as I have now come to expect from you, Aesthete. Beautiful, though slightly depressing, words. Now is probably not the best time for me to be reading such things, as I am a little unhappy, but that shouldn't detract from the fact that I know it is a great piece. Your grasp of language and choice of current topics make this really stand out.

And, as I would also expect, very unqiue take on the prompt.

    Luve yah- thanks for entering!

      Well, I wish you happiness.

I rarely can bring myself to write anything sad,
and I had hoped the "Yes, we can" would buoy
on the piece. But it such a difficult battle.
As Yem commented, only 45 days in office,
so much done already, but getting blamed
for all. But the country is now run by intelligence,
      not at all the same!!!!

Sending a smile and a cartoon hug to brighten your night!

I don't think others will find it sad, I am just in one of those moods tonight, lol. I still enjoyed it a lot.

DO you reckon it is a good thing that intelligence is running the country?

Fanks for hug! The cartoony nature of the guy makes his hands soft and squishy against me and that makes me smile!

There is no substitute for intelligence--
          the kind inside the brain.
The country's in a mess because
there was no one to restrain,
          to put integrity and honor
          ahead of ego and power.

Even the scarecrow knew the importance of a brain!

            Great poetic comment.

Oh, I thought you meant intelligence as in group of people that govern a country in secret or someting. My mind interprets things in strange ways.

Now that I understand you, I agree.

Oh, no, I meant real intelligence--the brain thinking,
not one of made-up words, having no understanding
              of history, using cowboy diplomacy!

Sorry, this is so USA oriented.
Been eight years since true smarts governed!
I'm obviously politically aligned with the new administration!!!

                  Heard on the news---
Obama to have an informal meeting
with the Queen when there for the Conference.

                  Glad my point came across,
for I was concerned it was too
                  cause-specific!

                  I appreciate your careful reading

Elephants are to blame. The end.

Yep, how long he been in office? 45 days maybe? Well the elephants are trying to keep a straight face and blame the lead donkey for the mess, lol

Yeah, it's a circus atmosphere all right.

And as we hear more and more the the near police state we were under, it's nice to be able to breath freely.
