See Sense in Nature

When a cloud in perfect eggshell blue skies
saw the premature moon mid-afternoon
it saw not the distance, only the size;
the moon was a mere pin head in its eyes
so it rained to lose weight, like a shrinking balloon.

The lioness chased death-sentenced gazelle
and saw not the blood craze in custom red haze
just horn and hooved calories running pell-mell
she thought to herself "this is my private hell;
to burn that fat off I'll be running for days."

The stout beech envied the slender ash tree
when comparing the trunk with its own wooden hunk
it naively imagined light was the key;
if not starch but protein was formed, naturally
it would soon turn to slim saint from portly old monk.

Now reflect: if what I've related came true
and the natural land let sense slip out of hand
do you think that these scenes would be anything new?
Are they only the rebounds from actions by you?
Look closely and recognise the lines in the sand.

Author notes

Um, ok, eating habits. I hope I'm haven't written anything too controversial here; let me explain my motives. At the moment I have two friends with particular significance in the inspiration of this poem. The first is battling her weight, the other is coasting along the road to anorexia. Basically, I feel I can only give support in both very different cases. What has struck me recently is that, especially in the modelling world, thinness has become silly, and all shapes are beautiful, and natural. (I've also just accepted that if I ate any less I would be permanently hungry, and maybe I am the right weight for my height and don't need to diet.) The natural bit was what I was getting at in the poem; if the animal kingdom, plant kingdom, etc. acted the way we did.... well. That's the question!

    I like the words and imagery of your poem. It is something to think about.
    It is a well written poem and it isn't too controversial as far as I know.

    Your poem speaks on a topic that I haven't understood very well. It helps me to understand some. Thank you for the explanation in the Author Notes
