Friday evening In Branigan's Bar

The giant air-conditioner
ingests the rising cigarette smoke,
but lacks the ingenuity
to suck away
the pall of noise
which surrounds us,
presses down on us,
envelops us
so completely,
that only those
with young attuned eardrums
can continue to converse.
We,  older, sit in silence,
sipping our drinks,
watching
the human ebb and flow;
listening,
as the conversational surf
breaks and froths
against our ill-tuned ears
and visually picking over
the variegated flotsam and jetsam
as it drifts before our eyes
in Friday-after-work freedom.

A well-written piece of contemporary poetry which is not only well observed and atmospheric, but also says something about the society we live in.
