Blood Darkness, infinite Love Part I

Waking up from death always hurt like hell.  The cold bright lights shinning down on me let me know I was on a gurney again.  My bare ass on this metal table brought an immediate chill up my spine.  I guess people never think of comforting the dead.  My limbs were barely recovering from the temporary rigor mortis when I began to come around.  Death is so hard on the living.    Focusing on my exterior reanimation of my skin, my mind floated back to the incident that brought me here.  The moment I wanted to tell me wife who I was.
It was a breezy warm night and it was perfect for the time I needed to reveal my heart to my love.  My wife and I always walked through this park to clear our minds from the day to day problems we had to encounter.  But today, sadness filled my soul for what I had to tell her.
“Sweetheart, I know you have been concerned about my absences and late night business activities.”  “But there is a good reason or shall I say a more immediate reason.”  I hesitated to spill out the intimate history to her.  This woman that has made me think that life can be different and what I am, she would handle it more so than the others.
“Go ahead darling, I’ve be with you long enough to know I have to be patient with you, so I can wait as long as it takes.”  She was loving and beautiful all wrapped in an enigma.  I’m still dumbfounded by the uneasiness she dispels from those around her.
“Do you believe Heaven or Hell has no baring on life and the existence of soul’s lives forever, changes but never dies?”
We had this conversation before but I wanted to prepare hers for the unlikely.
“Ok, you’re making me nervous now, you know how I feel spiritually but what does this mean between you and me?  Baby, are you dying, cancer or what?”  Her hand tightened her grip on me.  Damn, I was still stalling.
“No darling almost the opposite.  I need to let you know how long my love will last.” Wait.  My blood became hot and that meant only one or two things.  Either my hunger was accelerating or danger was very, very near.  The heat from my blood rising stopped me almost in mid sentence.
“Quite baby, please sit here.  There’s something wrong” a new fear painted over her face now.
“Baby what’s wrong?”  I couldn’t focus when she spoke.  Her voice was soothing but distracting
“Please sit still, quietly and trust me.”  Who the hell is it?  Could it be the hunters?  I left them in Virginia 7 1/2 years ago.  But was it them? Them, those hungry bastards that wanted my blood and all like me.  The Obayifo never had peace of mind or a piece of life to call their own for many centuries.

“Baby?”  Her voiced wavered with confusion and fear
“Stay here – I’ll be right back, and don’t look at me that way.  I’ll be right back.” I had to either face this danger or draw it to me. One way or another I had to protect her.
I became familiar with the mountains of Tennessee so I knew where I needed to be. Damn it has to be them, or at least their surrogates.  The stench of Lycans were clearly discernible.  My blood sensed their presence each and every time.  I had to find them first.  It was time for a change and it was something I haven’t done for years.  I released my essence and floated through the trees narrowing down the search.  I forgot how free this felt but upon returning.  The thirst would come.
There they were, just where I thought they would start.  It had to be the parking lot.  It was full of vehicles but these beasts were sniffing their way towards our ATV.  Tracking me, hunting me once again. The only evidence of my existence was a glowing mist that floated menacingly through the air.  I fed my hunger this way as I become something more. The taste of Lycan blood was foul but gave me strength.  I never relished this task.  I spotted one of them that transformed his form, but stayed in the shadows awaiting the command to come forward.  He would be the first victim.  His animal instinct did not take over his simple curiosity.  I floated down into his nostrils stifling his breath and muffling his choking cries. Rematerializing, I feed on his blood by ravaging the soft portion of his breast.  Damn, he’s a she.  Her breast felt softer than the rest of her body but I had to feed to defend my wife. My eyes stayed focus on the others darting in and around the parked cars trying to catch my scent.  I had to hurry.  My body was the connection to their desire.  They would not have me, today.
Her blood splattered across my naked body and her warm blood felt comforting as the droplets fell from my lips.  Now I was ready.  Yes, the blood, my stench become fodder for their hunt.  I watched as they froze in their tracks, taken pleasure while inhaling their hunger is if it were the aroma of a feast.  I ran deeper into the woods drawing their scent, teasing their senses.  This is who I am.  The hunter, back on the plains of Western Ghana feasting on the strong and the weak regardless.    Yes, this is who I am.  I baited these beasts toward me by evacuating my waste before me while back tracking to pick them off one by one.  My mouth salivated as they approached.  A few of them moved past me smelling my scent left as a diversion beyond the trees before me.  Still I waited, because I knew there would be one more I needed.  Yes, there he was.  Walking with his arrogance, he finally revealed himself.  It was the leader, trailing in the back still in his human form.  Good for me, his skin will rip easily under from my attack. My thoughts and excitement distracted me from suspending myself from above.  He heard the branches move as I plummeted down towards him. Grabbing his head in one coordinated movement, while breaking his neck and sinking my teeth into his jugular. My adrenaline was so high; I ripped his thorax out before he could utter a frightful whimper of mercy.  His flesh warm in my mouth, hung ghoulishly from my lips.  I was losing control and I loved it.  His beating heart pumped blood into my mouth through his exposed artery.  His body, limp in my arms was so close; that I could feel his heart beating its last minutes of life.  I could feel everything around as if my body was connected to it all.  Lost in the pleasure of my kill, I barely heard the pawns approaching.  There were choices to be made.  They could witness the carnage of their leader and flee in fear and despair or I could continue to satisfy my appetite by devouring them in a ballet of savage destruction, bathing my self in their blood.  It was their choice, I preferred the latter.  The foul beasts must have had a glimmer of intelligence, because they slowed to a frightful stop.  Seeing the ravaged throat and chest of leader, the smell of his death, they chose life.  I smelled their fear and it was delicious.  Fucking cowards.
There was something still in the air.  It kept my blood churning, burning within my veins.  My mind was in total disarray. My memory only remained current. I was fading from a being of human existence to the creature I was born to be.  Why was I in this thicket?  I shivered for no reason at all, other than trying to control the beast within me.  I had to regain control; I had to put this back together.  How did this start?  Why were they here?  My instinct had to lead me to something.  My mind could not grasp anything right now other than physical satisfaction.
My mind continued to wander and question it all but my feet moved on.  As if I were pulled towards a destiny.  Instinct lead me towards an opening towards a ravine where before me was…..was.  My God. Not her!!! Were the hell was my mind?  This figure, this  demon held my love over the edge with one hand looking deathly into my eyes.  I froze.
“I guess it is true, Die Toten reiten schnell .  She would have tasted death if you didn’t show up.”  So prince, she will die and you will die if you try to save her.  She will live if you come with us, your choice.” His snarling voice sickened me. But there before me stood this Nosferatu.  I knew him; he was one of the vampyre that were chasing me for years.  His European pale skin, dead and dry, towered toward the tress at least seven feet tall.  His eyes lusting at my skin like a lover eager to have me, eager to violate me at any cost.  But his presence took second notice as I stood transfixed by the limp body of the woman I ran off defending.  The woman I told to wait for me, now in the hands of this murder.  Her unconscious body hung there like a marionette waiting for her strings to be pulled.  How dare he speak of her with such disdain, better yet have the gall to have his hands on her.
“I have no time Herr Schwatz for your human sympathy I came here for one reason and one reason only.  And you have just given us the opening to obtain it.” His condescending tone elicited an inhuman snarl I detested.  But he had her, thus having the advantage, for now
“You have a choice now.” I walked towards him and opened my wrist with my teeth. “You can drink from my wrist and live as a day walker, a hybrid of your race and mine or you can follow your master’s plan, Only him tasting freedom as you forever bow down to him as your lord.”  The plan came to me as I watched his hunger grow while my body glisten in the moonlight.  His eyes widen as I moved closer with my arms outstretched towards him.  My blood slowly flowing into my palms caused his breathing to grow rapidly.  His chest moving more rapidly than before, He moved forward just slightly with his fangs exposed with the corner of is mouth turned up with pleasure, but suddenly. He froze and I lunged toward the arm with my wife dangling there ripping it from his fragile shoulder.  His screams echoed in my ears as I bit down deep within his bones to dislodge her but.  We plunged down the ravine like two free falling parachutes.  His screams fading as we fell.  I covered her body with mine as every exposed rock and trees ripped into my skin.  But she would live and I would die. Almost as if the Nosferatu predicted.

I made my choice, and it would be life for her.  I slammed into the evergreens and fell hard breaking my spine on the ground below.  Damn this hurts.  I lost consciousness as I saw my wife look into my eyes and the campers rushing to our aid after witnessing the miraculous fall.  I bet this would be on YouTube.

Author notes

Here are a few definitions:
An obayifo is a vampire-like mythological creature from West Africa coming from the folklore of the Ashanti. It is known as asiman by the Dahomey people. The obayifo was also considered a kind of witch. In Ashanti folklore, obayifo are very common and may inhabit the bodies of ordinary people. They are said to have shifty eyes and be obsessed with food. When travelling at night they emit a phosphorescent light.
Obayifo are believed to kill children by remotely sucking their blood. They can enter the bodies of animals to attack humans. They are also said to suck the life from the land and weaken crops, particularly cacao Konstantinos describes the obayifo as an "intentional psychic vampire

Neuntoter - A German vampire species found especially in Saxony, traditionally a great carrier of plagues, usually seen during the severe epidemics. The name neuntoter comes from the generally held belief that it takes nine days for this vampire to be fully formed in the grave.

One of its lines Denn die Toten reiten schnell ("For the dead travel fast") was to be quoted in Bram Stoker's classic Dracula.

Brilliant story, I was captivated by it the moment I started reading, and couldn't leave it until I was through. Then, of course, I had to re-read parts of it...

Quite the story-line, and quite the characters. They lent a historical/mythological touch to your write that is well appreciated by me, and others as well, I am sure.

The ending seems to beg for more, will there be a sequel?

Thanks for entering our contest, and good luck to you.
