Her Reward

Missing image
For forty long years she rose everyday
she ate her small breakfast then went on her way
Off to her place at the same dusty mill
afraid to be late and afraid to be ill

For there was another always to hire
so some how she had to hang on to retire
the pension they promised was all she  desired
she'd do what she must what the company required

She bought a small house and she saved all she could
the years trudged by slowly but her hopes were good
she kept up the payments and watched her dreams grow
the time passed away so murderously slow

When finally her time had come to it's end,
the paycheck would be there on that she'd depend,
and she'd never have to go back anymore
she gleefully walked out the factory door

The trip to the doctor was only routine
till the X rays came back and on them was seen
the factory's final insult thrown at her
for all of the years that she'd had to endure

They've promised her chemo and pain medicine
but she's lost the fight and the factory's won
their promises lies, all the management said
for all of her labors  she soon will be dead

Your poem is so heartfelt and sadly...so true. Thank you for being a voice to all those who silently go about their life trying to do the best they can with what they have. We cannot do any more than that. This is such a tragic state of affairs. Well done!

This was heartbreaking and sadly alot of times true.
Our elderly face a bleak unknown future sometimes and then comes someone like you to tell her story.
    Emotional writing of excellents!
