Hard-Boiled Dame.

She was one of those hard-boiled dames
Who hit first and talked later,
And who’d split your lip
As soon as kiss it,

But Hank felt safe
When she was around,
Even the brawny bar hoodlums
Watched their language

And Step when she walked in
And gave them the eye,
And the others girls
Gave her a wide berth

And never laughed
At her wild dress
And obscene words
That escaped

Her fiery tongue,
But Hank remembered her best
When she was wild,
And drank him under the table

Many a long night and day,
Until cancer ate her away.
