Once Lover Lost

You there, come hither and listen to me
as I tell a tale, a twisted tragedy
Of a deceitful man and his forlorn wife
Who promised each other love for life
Young lovers once, obsessed with each other,
but then this man, unsatisfied, lay with another

Each night when thought his wife was asleep
He would dress and then out the house he'd carefully creep

He craved something virgin, something fresh
Thus indulged in the sinful pleasures of flesh
Each night a new woman to help satisfy
All the urges he believed his wife would deny
But each morning he'd wake near his wife's side
And all his odious secrets he'd shamelessly hide
Pretending to love her until night came around
When he'd prowl for a lover like an indecent hound

For months she pretended to not notice a thing,
And tried helplessly to forgot, and to cling
to what she knew was lost but would not accept
the myriad of secrets her husband had kept
In sadness and sorrow she spoke to him;
'Dear husband, dear lover, do you think me that dim?
For months I lay alone and I weep
While in the arms of another you choose to sleep,
You say to me you are faithful and pure
But you no longer know what these words mean anymore.'

With these words she dropped to the floor,
Not a single sound from her mouth anymore
'Till death do us part', she was no longer his wife
The man was agape with her sudden absence of life
For this lecherous wound there was no cure
thus she was delivered to her sepulcher

But that, my patient friend,
is not this tale's end
You are now wondering why his wife
Deemed it fair to take her own life
If it was he who she should castigate
Why is it she who suffers sudden death as her fate?
Here is the answer to that consequential question,
She had cleverly left the evidence in her husband's possession
She had planned her death to be entirely brief
And leaving the earth she would show no grief
For she knew in the end who would be accused
Her husband would pay for the love he abused.
