I was working at the city desk,
late shift, low light,
and two great legs appeared
just over the top
of my half-finished pastrami.
I looked up.
Two great hips, one nice waist -
you know the rest.
I always was a sucker for a sad story -
and you know this woman had to have one.
Exactly one bottle of bad gin, three quarts of tonic,
and the green dry pulp of five California limes later
and I found out:
Emily's sad story was only just beginning.
Author notes
Yeah, sorry about the title - it had to be done.

To quote Annie Savoy, "Oh my!"

Congratulations on your award! I happen to enjoy the title chosen... quite fitting
lol
An excellent piece with outstanding imagery!

I was actually expecting something else with the title but nooooo....you had to write this shtick. Wait, what? Nevermind....ummm....good beginning. When you gonna write the rest?

Kind of like the girl Mom was always afraid of, no?

Personally,
I liked the title, not to mention the rest. I never tire of the Emily Chronicles.

This sounds like a narrative right out of the Naked City or The Thin Man. Yeah I may be dating myself but you would have to watch some of those old movies to really, really appreciate what you wrote! I'm not one for using this phrase ...but this really was just "awesome". And hey, don't apologize for the title....that title is cool! Good luck in the contest.

ah, indeed it did have to be done.

and the green dry pulp of five California limes later
that was just awesome.
