Out there, beyond the harbour,
all is now quiet.
The choppers have uplifted
their last loads,
The troopships have departed
on their long journey,
and the destroyers,
with last minute Aldis signals
to those on shore,
have taken their station
to port and starboard
of the convoy.
The bands, the banners;
and those who had come to farewell,
still dabbing at tear-wet eyes,
have dispersed.
All is peaceful!

I have to admit there is a certain beauty about this kind of leavetaking, a beauty in the emotion of those left behind.
