The sun lady

The sun lady rises early.
The birds make sure of that,
with their twittering practice
before they join the dawn chorus.

The sun lady is neat and tidy,
and very regular in her habits.
Her first task is to sweep the sky
clear of stars.

Then she spends the day
slowly crossing the sky
to check that all the mountains,
rivers and seas are still in place.

Finally, she hides herself away,
tired from her long journey,
unaware that the stars,
have crept back across the sky.

But for the sun lady
there is no rest;
she must busy herself
digging a tunnel back

under the mountains,
rivers and seas, to the place
from whence, that morning,
she had started her journey.
