Cartwright Hall, Lister Park, Bradford


The gold the white ,
each gallery beautiful sight,
pictures remembered, painterly style,
old and new jostle:
Desire to go again and again,

                                  in a while.



Author notes

The powerful effect of the paintings hanging in the Hall's galleries imprinted pictures in my mind - Romney, Lowry, Hockney, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Singer Sargent, Edward Lear, Lavery and so many more - pictures that must wait a little until the euphoria settles before I can go again. In the meanwhile I will remember the Victorian Wedding and the bride signing her maiden name for the last time, Hockney's early painting in "normal" style of a road in Fagley just a few miles from here, Sargent's stunning watercolour sketch of a piece of Roman architecture, the 30 foot painting of an Egyptian feast crammed with detail and exquisitely worked. For the rest, they come and go, swirling around in my head.

    this makes me want to at least look these works of art up and view them on line since I will in all liklihood never be able to see them up close and personal as you have. Lovely images you have painted here.

    I love art galleries. I once-upon-a-time wanted to be an artist. That was all the way up until my last classes in Art while in high school. Nice memories attached to this one. Very well written. Good luck in the contest.

    only six lines and I was standing there with you. perfect.

    Painting is one of my other hobbies I like next to writing. I have had some of my work hanging in the local gallery. I love to visit and just look. This poem takes me there. I think I will go this weekend.
