I spent a year one day
on a fruitless quest for gold
thinking wealthy
was the way I wanted most to live.
In retrospect the more I dreamed
the more remote this fantasy became.
It seems personal enrichment
(in terms of enormous monetary gains),
for me at least, went sorely unfulfilled.
Though sometime later on
freed from the burdens of illusion
I came to understand
we live as much on wings of chance
as we do by rule
where men believe they still command.
And so, in the light of experience one finds,
not always in reality
does the thinkable occur.

True to experience. I think there is a difference between the power of 'thinkable' and the power of 'believable'.

"freed from the burdens of illusion

I absolutely love these lines, they are my favorite!
Very nicely written, and it flows from one thing to the other very smoothly. Plus I love the first line "I spent a year one day". Technically speaking, that wouldn't work out right but it reminds me of one of my favorite musicals. The Newsies. One of the guys says "I spent a month there one night." And so that just made me happy.
I like this poem alot!

I like it David, no matter how much we plan and organise we are still the victims of chance. Our future still depends on which way the wind blows.

So much truth in what you write, being in the right place at the right time is so random and no matter how we plan, fate just takes its course.
