67 Steps

I go up the same 67 steps
I went up 25 years ago
the old apartment
still there. moving back in
across the hall
I need a place away from the farm
tired of mud, horseshit
rednecks. besides
I can get my daughter in a better high school

67 steps

damn
I'm winded
take a break go out on the verandah
best thing about this place
3rd floor walkup but
trees all over
great view of the city
the clock tower
on the hill

Hi there!
I hear

across the porch
my neighbor's daughter
17 sitting cross legged
on a lounge chair
I roll over like I'm 20 again
eager beaver, me
Hiya!
I used to live in your apartment!

no kidding, when?

ahhh...
a long time ago

oh
well, thats really cool, maybe I'll meet your daughter soon
(how did she know?)

Okay, yeah, soon
she'll be up here tomorrow
probably

I go back inside
see myself in the mirror

67 steps
aren't what they used to be

Sometimes a diary entry works to give a universal message. This doesn't so much read to me as a typical "i need to write about myself in order to validate my existence" but rather a reckoning of age -- tinged with sadness a bit of that "will the Goddess give me back my youth by her glance"

Some moments really do scream "mortality" don't they?

I like this one, it has a wonderful feeling of going back in time at the beginning, with the hiya' bringing you back to the present. Great.

Our poetry becomes journals of our life, each year like a step we've climbed, and now you're looking at those steps a little differently from almost the same vantage point. Sounds like your daughter has the promise of a new friend already. That reflection in the mirror...yeah I can relate.
