New Day's Dawning

At midnight's strike hours cast their dulcet garb
and ticking clocks steal in to take their prey
dark shadows taunt with traps they come to lay.
My mind where phantoms haunt with vicious barb
cut deep with sad laments. Night terrors sent
to rob my soul, as I am cruelly blessed
by silence kissed, by loneliness caressed.
Now battle worn and weary, drained, all spent
let dawn end nightmare visions, Dante’s Hell.
To vanquish foolish fears by light of day
in rays of sun down on my knees I pray
and rise with hope from where in pain I dwell.

Exile dire thoughts of future nights’ despair
let day begin without a single care.

Nice message at the end of this poem. Don't let those night terrors get to you. Good write...THANKS for sharing this!

  • I don't know my old poets well enough to know who this sounds like, but I'm sure it's (even if only accidentally) a pastiche of some old poet of yore. It has a very pleasant, "authentic" poetic voice to it.

In the last line, you begin "With exiled thoughts..." which, I think, implies YOUR exiled thoughts. That said, the very last line reads better to me with "this" in lieu of "my". It might just be my Americanese, but somehow the emphasis on "this" rolls better for me than on "my".

    Whatchathink?

    • Thanks for your suggestion. I decided to take the 3rd route instead...and opted for neither! I've re written the last two line and I'm happier with it, So thanks for the nudge, always appreciated
