In Different Eyes

I watch you as you sleep
there on the couch -
splayed clumsily out -
abandoned to your self
and the world around you.

A stealthy spider of drool
drops itself lazily
from the lowest corner of
your parted mouth,
and slides slowly
down to crouch in a pool
on the fabric below -
a thin glistening thread
connecting it to its source
in case it must reverse
its course in retreat, I suppose.

Five years ago, would that
have seemed to me
a wondrous silvery strand?
An escaped piece of your
beloved essence?

Ten years ago,
would I have even seen it?
Imagining those dark eyes
beneath their closed lids
or tracing the line of your nose,
would I have noticed?

Next year, who will sit
where I am now
and watch as you sleep?

What did you think

the intimacy is so very intricate in this. it wows you, yet it shows earthy qualities. it veers a bit from the depthness of words and rest upon the depth of introspection. you can see as well as feel the scene that is painted into this.you continue to awe me.

Who indeed? But no one takes the place of a heart that watches as you do. She will make her own, and t'were it not for what you knew and loved ten years ago, this would not have had the impact it carries now.

I felt asurge at my own tender thoughts for dark eyes that flame and laugh, sometimes a current still pronounced even in sleep, and he without the slightest inkling of how much weight they carry in my heart.

Nodding in reflection at the power of love and "what if's" caught in this write. ~K
