From sea to shore, and o’er the mountain side,
To your green hills of sweetest flowers growing,
Within my heart, 'tis only you I long to see.
And I shall come when summer's in the meadow,
Or when your valley's hushed and white with snow,
Sure I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow,
For Ireland, ‘tis only you I long to know.
Seadh, all my dreams will warm and happy be,
If you'll not fail to always wait for me,
To your grand heart of Irish blessings flowing,
I’ll always sing Éirinn go Brách as I'm going.
O! Ireland, I hear your harps a’ calling me,
From sea to shore, and o’er the mountain side,
On your Emerald Isle I ever long to be,
To sing of Irish peace in freedom’s key.
Author notes
My song was inspired by Danny Boy, a song written by Frederick Weatherly around the turn of the 20th century, using an old Irish aire. It was popularized in vaudeville by the Irish Americans, becoming a
St. Patrick's Day favorite; the song is widely considered an Irish anthem. Image: High King of Ireland, Brian Buru's Harp. Brian Bóruma reigned as Emperor of the Irish 1002–1014. It is the harp, not the shamrock, that is the symbol of Ireland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Boru
