The CHICKEN on my Head (& VIDEO)

Late one night, I wrote berserkly;
Perky for my work was quirky,
Slightly smirky... jerky!
As I lay down and I read…

But in the murky darkness lurked ‘he’,
CHICKEN, as I read.

Lighting set to see my writing,
Righting wrongs I’d wrote, reciting.
THEN a sighting left me biting
Nails until I bled…

Fear igniting bird delighting
Cruelly, as I bled.

“CHICKEN, with your spiteful staring,
Glaring is that beak you’re wearing!
Damn, you’re daring! Sat preparing
Darkness in your head!

Foulness flaring; subtly sharing
Darkness, from your head”.

- ‘Surely dreams will halt despairing…
I shall rest my head’. -

Then he turned, that CHICKEN dancing,
Prancing, up my bed advancing…
Grimly glancing… dancing!
Was that CHICKEN on my bed…

Timely trancing, sheet romancing
CHICKEN, on my bed!

“No!” It seemed he’d spied me peeking,
Freaking at my mattress creaking!
Slyly sneaking… seeking
Something?! CHICKEN, bird of dread…

Bed sheet beaking, EVIL reeking
CHICKEN, bird of dread!

- How I wished that bird was Peking.
Here is what I said: -

“YOU from murky darkness lurking,
Watching, as my work I read, yes
YOU the fear igniting bird delighting
Cruelly, as I bled, yes
YOU uncaring, MONSTER sharing
Darkness that’s inside your head!
You timely trancing, sheet romancing
CHICKEN
GET FROM OFF MY BED!

You bed sheet beaking, EVIL reeking
CHICKEN,
SPITEFUL BIRD OF DREAD!”

The CHICKEN seemed to like me crying;
Lying there… and started FLYING!
Terrifying CHICKEN flying
Down towards my head!

HORRIFYING, sense defying
CHICKEN on my head!

- How I wished that bird was FRYING…
SPITEFUL BIRD OF DREAD! –

“GO, be gone and leave me snoozing!”
Oozing darkness, CHICKEN… fusing?
So CONFUSING! Saneness losing!
CHICKEN in my head?

Brain abusing, muse infusing
CHICKEN in my head!

Peck-peck-pecking,
Peck-peck-pecking.

Peck.
Peck.
Peck.

Excellent write. Poe inspired, indeed. Poe is a distant relative of mine. He was a great poet. I love these two short lines:
    - How I wished that bird was FRYING…
    SPITEFUL BIRD OF DREAD! –

A wonderful brilliant parody of a poem that in my opinion deserves to be forgotten if that is humanly possible. Since this is probably not possible parody is the next best thing.

On a personal note; went to see Lou Reed. wanted to rock. He wanted to read The Raven. Got so pissed off I left in mid concert. Took me six months befor I could listen to the Velvet Underground again. Would never pay to see Lou live again unless he was the opening act for Iggy Pop.

  • Woah.
I LOVE this. If I could give you more than three clappies, I would.

  • - How I wished that bird was Peking....brilliant. This is a really fun, creative poem that can't help but bring ol' Edgar to mind. You're going on my favorites list...AWESOME!

  • I had to come back for more. This is poetry at it's best. To see the author perform his words this way, simply reading cannot compare. BRAVO!!!!

  • This was absolutely awesome. I loved the entire piece.
It definitely put me in mind of Poe's Raven. One question. What was with the rubber gloves?
Not that they took anything away from your work. I mean this video reading was the best I've seen in a very long time. Your gold is well deserved.

Kind of like,Edgar Allen Poe with a chiken. Great stuff, though.

  • LMAO, the gloves made it, bro...
And the "Chicken... in my head!"
But my FAVORITE part was definitely "peck...peck...peck!"

  • Masterpiece!!

I have to say that this poem with the YouTube performance was an absolute joy to come across. I was blown away b the poem first and then clicked to view your performance and was left in fits of laughter.

I checked out your other YouTube recitals too and they didn't dissappoint. In fact I am strongly considering investing in your publication and getting my hands on a copy of 'Variable Dusk'.

    Absolutely loved it, thanks.

    FANTASTIC!

At first I read the poem and it just flowed so perfectly, almost like it was singing...then I watched your performance which really did add another dimension to it. Are you a professional actor? Wonderful write, great performance, just amazing all round. The most entertained I have been since joining this site!

P.S Um, what's with the gloves, did you end up stuffing the chicken?

I think you have a good understanding of poetry, from the perspective of entertainment. You could also call this a salute to Edgar Allen Poe, because you do a credible job here. Kept my attention for sure.

Didn't get to see the video (bad internet connection) but the flow of the poem was amazing just reading it. Great job!

  • From what I've read about Poe, he was a pleasant man (when sober) but didn't have a sense of humor. One hopes he can't access AllPoetry, wherever he is. He would probably not enjoy seeing this wonderful poem!

This speaks to me of mental illness. I could be wrong but it is said that no two people can look at the same picture and see the same thing. Either way, this is brilliant. Well done.

    Fabulous

I truly enjoyed having this poem performed. The addition of the video module may have well flopped with other recitals but this Poe type creation was so passionately enacted that even the person next to me who has no love of poetry, or literature in general, stopped to lean over and watch.
I feel the poem had great flow for most of the duration, with only a small section seeming to be an effort or a stretch to rhyme. This seems possibly to do with verbal delivery rather then how it reads in text.

Overall, a great read that I would pass along to others without hesitation. Terribly entertaining!
