The Simple Things

Out here in the country,
I guess you could say we are pleased by the little things in life.
Far from civilization,
Just us and our farm

When I first learned about cruelty,
Daddy told me he was gonna slaughter our pig, Jesse
And turn him into a year's worth of ham sandwiches.
I don't think I ever cried harder in my life.
I still can't look at a ham sandwich, to this day.

When I first learned about cooking,
Momma showed me how to make a blackberry pie
Using my very own hands.
I got a frying pan of my very own,
And she taught me how to fry eggs.
(But never bacon)

When I first learned about the unfairness of the world,
I was four years old, running from the boy across the way.
I stopped to look at a trail of ants, then decided
To step on one, to see what would happen.
Do I have to even tell you that ant died?
It wasn't right that they were so tiny and defenseless
Susceptible to everything

When I first learned about conquering challenges,

I was flat on my face, crying 'bout a scraped knee

My sister was a pro at skipping rope,

But each time I would fall and yell,

"I'm giving up!"

And Sarah wouldn't let me.

When I did learn how to skip rope,

I showed the boy across the way,

And he just thought the scrapes on my knees were cool.

When I first learned about love, I was thirteen.

And that boy across the way became my only challenge.

He came to my house on a sunny, bright Thursday

Radio in hand, and said, "Come with me".

He led me through an open field

The home of hidden prairie dogs and endless flowers

To no particular spot, where we sat and had a picnic

When the bright sky turned dark,

Echoing booms threatened to ruin our fun.

I panicked that we would get soaked, and spoil everything. He said, "So what?"

Each rain drop that fell brought us closer for warmth

And during this thunderous storm,

The boy across the way and I shared our very first kiss.

When I first learned about heartbreak,

The boy across the way moved to a big city,

Forever leaving behind me and my scraped knees,

Left with nothing but his old radio

I cried for a while, but knew he had to go

Otherwise, I wouldn't learn a thing.
