To the Stranger On Bake Oven Road

My damn four-wheel drive is out
and I can' t seem to pull out of this rut

nobody wants to get involved
and whiz pass me
like I am part of the snow-pile scenery

some asshole
behind me
blinks his lights

honking his horn

I roll down my window
to signal
to go around me
but to my surprise
he is already at my driver side door

'You look a little stuck,
how's your four-wheel-drive?'

'Not working', I reply

he nods,

'turn your wheel to the right
and pull back slowly...

too much, there ya go
that's it...

now to the left...

slow slow slow'

he works me out of the icey patch

he walks next to my car,
'I will follow you.
Remember to take it easy on the curve ahead'

I concentrate on the road
and the movements of my vehicle
talking to it, like it will understand
and cooperate

I almost forget about the stranger behind me
and when I look up at my rear view mirror
I watch him turn left
on memorial

and that's when I realize
I may never see him again

Author notes

didn't get a chance to thank him so this goes out to him

not many stop and help anymore these days. a lot of us only look out for ouselves...I know cuz I was stuck for over an hour and nobody stopped

Im still revising this piece. Constructive criticism is welcome

    Excellent.

You bring the reader into your poem; allow them to share your particular view of the world.

Like this write...It is those things that make life interesting, the kind strangers we meet, the folks that are generous without a show that keep me hopeful...

Really liked this. My family lives in upstate ny in the snowbelt in a small town. I live in southern ct on the coast in a city. I visit up there whenever possible and have been stuck in the snow up there and also where I live. There is definitely a differenece in small town people. They will always stop to help. Where I live they will drive past you, around you, probably over you if they had to, but no one ever stops to help! Happy to know you had someone to help you that day!
    Hugs, Moon

ya...I was consentrating so much on what I was doing..it wasn't until then when I saw him turn off that I realized I never got to say thank you or get his name or anything. I felt kinda bad...because I always say thanks to those who do anything for me! so I wrote this to get it off my chest

thanks for the read and the comment

There are Angels that take human form, I believe, and help out everynow and then. At least he was an angel to stop and help.
Thank you for writing this. It was most enjoyed.

You are so right, there are few people left in this world willing to help. Lucky he was there. Best to you
