All You Ever Wanted

You try,
each day (because each day is a new chance)
to take every new challenge,
to make a place for the people you love,
to make them proud to say
they are your sister, brother, mother, father, friend.

You try to always do the right thing
and make amends for times you failed.

You try to keep the yard clean, to paint the fence,
and take in the goddam Christmas lights every goddam year.
You pay your taxes, loan money to friends,
and can't resist those Girl Scout cookies.

And all you ever really wanted was a little time
to believe everything could work out
before the next tragedy.

Do you remember that time
you laughed so hard you hurt
and cried and laughed a little more?

Hold on to that
when you cannot hold to me.

    This is exceptionally ...

    poignant and powerful. I'm impressed.

    Keep on keeping on.

This really is beautiful, and so are the sentiments behind this. It's nice to know that there's someone who knows me better than I do myself sometimes.

This sounds like a bit of desperation: when she can no longer hold on to the facade of normalcy of being with you (narrator of the poem), hold on to the essence of what normal is. It sounds as if you are unwilling to let go, despite knowing what would be best for her.

I relate to this more than you'll ever know. (Except I don't have to take down Christmas lights) The part about just wanting a little time to believe... yeah. Time like that would be perfect. We all have to hold on to something, that's for sure.
