With fox and chicken and grain
Wanting did he to cross with all
And see all possessions again
So first he took the poultry with
And dropped her at the farm
Came back to the town side then
And all were safe from harm
Next did he the vixen carry
Though squirm she did all the way
Dropped off fox and returned with the chick
To save her for dinner next day
He grasped up then the sack of grain
For his fifth trip across the river
The chicken wondered if she had been left
All alone on the town side to shiver
With fox and grain now near his home
The chicken he went back to fetch
After carrying her back on this last trip of his
Inattentive, he tripped in the ditch
Author notes
This was written as a contest entry with the following requirements:
Figure this out:
A farmer lived on a farm, DAH...ya think??? but his farm and the town were divided by a river, so each time he went to town, he had to cross over the river in a boat...really???
So he buys a chicken, a fox and a bag of grain.
he can't leave the chicken with the bag of grain..and...
he can't leave the fox with the chicken.
he can only take one at a time in the boat.
HOW MANY TRIPS back and forth across the river will he have to make
....to get them all back to the farm ?
You have to explain each trip.

I had to check the contest to get a feel for what was going on here, but once I did it cleared a lot up. Nice write, and a fun way of answering the question. Best of luck in the contest with this.

Thanks. It was fun to figure out and fun to write. Great contest! On the rhyming: I am a musician as well, so sometimes I just can't help myself!
