more like a sure thing

It also sounds like a true life skid
where contests are used to forestall
the chance of a real thing
which might last.
Winning might just be a counter bid
To stop contestant's free fall
Inspiring the pen to sing
As in the past.

I, too, have seen contests with an unusual number for the rewarded points. One was 400 for gold, 53 for silver and 5 for bronze, I think. 
Why even bother for those amounts, unless you know your pen will win?
