The Buddha's Shadow 1 (English Sonnet)

Missing image
If one says he’s enlightened, seek his shadow,
his ego’s subtle veil clings to his soul,
still grazing on his mind’s illusive meadow,
there’s “someone home”, still playing Buddha’s role.

The concept of enlightenment loved dearly,
attached to methods, rituals and rules,
his mortal eyes betray him, can’t see clearly,
his thoughtful teachings are a trap for fools.

So kill the Buddha(-concept) ! Keep His Presence,
for Buddha-nature’s not a pot of clay,
but formless, timeless no-thing, empty essence,
once Karma’s clay dissolves in Maya’s play.

The thought of medicine is not the cure,
the Buddha’s nature’s Buddha-less and pure.

aye, with mortal eyes we only see illusion and that is where we go wrong, we lay claim to other's ideas where we should really just accept and embrace the presence. a good poem, flowing along form.

To acknowledge our shadows as the sun warms us in brighter days is to indeed flow with the natural waves of enlightenment. I love how you break the idols and formed walls of what must be sacred and
remind us that divine essence only "visits" bodies,
but will shelter in a soul for uncountable days.

It occurred to me yesterday on the train that on a cloudy day there are no shadows, but when we see the sun, also shadows are clear. A person who claims to have no shadow is not enlightened yet... as you say in stanza 1 and 2.
I love your sonnets, and this is another thought provoking work. Best of luck, sweetheart!

"for Buddha-nature’s not a pot of clay,

    What a graphic reference
the reverse of the tangible, maleable clay
to a "No-thing." Maa, the teacher, speaks!

With much love and respect to you, dear maa.

I thank you for this insight. I claimed I had enlightenment and immediately looked for my shadow, which I found easily and haven't been apart from since!!! Who knew it was so easy! Ha ha ha. Very beautiful and insightful.

    Brilliant

It is so easy to be taken in by wise words spouted by fools and charlatans. This is a fantastic write and teaches us that we should follow the pathless path, not tread in the boot prints of another. There is only one master we should listen to, that is the master inside each one of us
