Why Can't They Get It?

Remember that long ago time
When we weren't such free folks,
But they just don't get it
That change don't happen over night.

We had to fight,
We had sit ins
We had Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
But they just don't get
It takes more than one man
To make believers out of a dream
More than just one speech
To rally a nation
More than one skin color
To make AMERICA.

Remember that time we
Spent our days in cotton fields
Now we waste our dreams
Watching video hoes
Teach our children how to
Shake their asses.

But they just don't get
That that's just one interpretation
Of what music is.
What our poetry has to say.
See they forgot about Langston
And they let Zora die a house maid,
But they just don't get it.

We fought for the front of the bus,
Just to have the option to CHOOSE
To sit in the back.

We voted for that black man,
But why?
Cause of his skin color.
That's good.
That's fine,
That's what they believe.
But they just don't get it.

My president is black
And I am too.
But they just don't get
The reason for my vote.

My president
Is a poet.
He has an intelligence
That we have lacked for the past eight years,
Come on, people,
What don't you get?

This is our time to shine
Black or white
Democratic or Republican
But they just don't get
We rally behind America.
Not just that black man in office,
Not just that speaker of poetry.

Why don't they get
It will take a unity for change?
It will take us all going blind,
To finally see what that man has to say.

But they just don't get it.

Author notes

My president is a leader. My president is a man...before he is a skin color. I wonder is that all we will ever see. - cgirl0410

What I feel in my heart...and he has the blood of both, ordained for a time such as this, and we Americans should be rallying behind him to get those old geisers in congress to stop their games. Powerful words to your write. Blessings.

    Excellent!

This was an awesome piece of writing.
You dealt with a sad reality in this country.
My hope is that as president Obama continues
to lead, they will begin to see that its not
about anything other than Caring about others
besides yourself. Having integrity and character.
Staying the course even in the face of adversity.
We will overcome as a country because the door
has been openned. There is no turning back.
    Look Listen wait and see!

    You got it sistah!

It fills my heart with joy to hear another voice speaking of our new pres as the man who will lead the "we" who are willing to get up off our butts and follow, to wholeheartedly put in our heart and hands, time and love for each other, not a color, into play to make the world what we need it to be. Thanks for you fine write and for the beautiful heart you are.

    Write on, sistah!

    Beautiful.

I, for one, haven't really been paying much attention to politics at all. The whole Bush fiasco really made me lose hope for our Government and I really didn't want to have anything to do with it. But, I think this time around, things are going to be a lot different. Maybe, for once, next time around, I'll be one of the ones voting because there's something to believe in.
