Well once there was a clever young girl
You’d think she’d have it all
All the brains and ability in the world
But this girl, my, she did bawl.
She tried everything to lift her mood
From fads to thick creamy paste
But she looked in the mirror, sadder still
And moaned that it was all a waste.
So one day, this bright young girl
Who no longer giggled with glee
She sought a man to help her out
To beg, offer and plea
She found him in a dark room
The only light upon a stage
He told her to speak from there
Under his superior gaze
She spoke of all the woe she had
How she wanted so much more
That her body, it lacked in beauty
But instead, contained a lot of gore
She whispered all her superficial fears
Her anxieties of how she appeared
And as she spoke, tears they did fall
And all her make-up got smeared
“Oh please make me beautiful!”
She sobbed as she sank to her knees
“Make me thin! Make me pretty!
Help me! I’ll do anything you please!”
The man scratched at his chin
And looked down at her for a while
He took his time to think it out
Then stood up with a smile
“My girl!” He said, in a booming tone
“You are prettier than you think!
You do not need to change yourself!”
He said with a grin and a wink.
But her spirits, they were not lifted
Her happiness stayed at a low
She had lived with herself for many years
And this mans opinion she did not want to know
The man, he saw her gloomy face
And he sighed in defeat
“Fine!” He said with mock anger
“I will give you a special treat”
Well this girl was treated
To every cosmetic in town
Things were sucked in, hoisted up
And clothing was pulled down.
She came back to her social life
Masked from head to toe
She hadn’t eaten anything in a week
And her hair had lost its glow
With her all-new stylish appearance
She sauntered up to this boy
She giggled and bounced up and down
Expecting compliments with joy
This boy, he looked her up and down
Hesitated, and then did so again
He opened his mouth in disgust
And spoke to her with immense distain.
“What’s happened to you my dear?” He asked
“You look so utterly different to me!
You are unrecognisable in that mask you wear
You are now unappealing as can be!”
“I used to think you were a star in the sky!
My angel that put me under her spell
But now it seems that you have changed
And now you look like a monster from hell!”
He shook his head and turned away
But he turned to ask her why
“Why did you change yourself?
You were perfect so tell me why?”
Her gaze it stayed at his feet
She could not meet his eyes
“With no self confidence in myself
I feared that my little beauty had died”
He left her then, to wallow once more
In the mess that she had just made
She cried her sorrow once again
And as she did, her mask began to fade
She saw the man stride to her
With confidence she no longer owned
Once she told him her tale of loss
He looked at her and groaned.
“Don’t you see, my young pretty girl?”
He said with pity in his eyes
“You once had beauty on the inside
But you lost it and now all beauty has died”
“How can I regain what I had?” She pleaded
“I never knew I was perfect to him!
I didn’t think I was ever actually pretty
Or to be beautiful I didn’t need to be slim”
“It seems to me, my dear young girl
That you are not as clever as you seem
Some of that space that is in your head
Is nothing more than superficial steam”
He gave her a wipe and her mask disappeared
Her old self she became once more
He gave her a pat on the head then turned
And they parted through separate doors
She ran through the roads that were her life
And finally ran down the right one
She found him wandering by the river
With a look that showed no fun
She spun him around and apologised
Her words jumbled and strange
When finally she could say no more
A simple kiss they then exchanged
He looked deeply into her eyes
And stroked her wavy brown hair
“I’ve always loved you how you looked
And I’ve adored what you wear”
They walked off hand in hand
Her smile as bright as you’d ever see it
There once was a clever pretty young girl
And finally now she could see it
In a list
What did you think
