Contempt

Photographs of your image
conjure your presence,
still waiting.

Sentenced to before
and silenced by after,
I have managed

to deny you.

(until now, in this moment

that you begin to whisper)

I strain my ear to hear
your tiny voice from
the core of my being,

tearfully asking. . .

"Can I sleep in your
bed tonight?"

Author notes

I tried to be subtle, I hope I didn't lose the essence.

Wow. This is a heartbreaker. My tears are welling up. (It's been a tough day.) So much in so few words. Masterfully written.
