The Old Coat

Took it to the trash a time or two. . .
always retrieved it, covered in dew.
It was the puppy's bed when he came,
burrowed right in before he had a name.
He's gone to the Rainbow Bridge now,
where coats, I fear, they do not allow.
Before that it was my gardening gear,
a buddy against the cold without peer.
It was the coat I wore in my homelessness,
so the poor thing has known stress and duress.
It came from a charity who helped the lost,
but I would not give it up for any pretty cost.
Who knows who wore it before it became mine?
Maybe it was dear in a better and richer time.
But like old women who toil to survive,
this old coat has a place in keeping me alive.

Wonderfully executed! Amazing how the simplest of objects hold such great warmth in them!! This piece of poetry depicts how little things in life bring contentment to us in the greatest ways!! A very satisfying read!! The theme is brilliant, and you have done justice to it with a nice choice of words! Way to go.........

I find it impressive how you can empty your thoughts about a personal object in your poetry. this is something I have been working on. I am impressed how the old coat tells the storey of a life of use. The poem helps me picture it.

How precious is that old coat!

Aye, can it be that the history that worked its way into the fabric of that old coat is somehow beneficial in keeping the wearer alive? A particularly appealing idea that gives me chills. Thank you for sharing your inspiration!
