Ugandan Exodus

The rebels had just left.
They burned our huts,
slayed our goats,
put salt in our fields,
And then, they walked north.

My dad laid dead.
along with several of his friends
Mom's also gone.
The soldiers dragged her along.
For some unknown reason
Like the last time
They raped five girls before,
all under age nine

The Lord's Resistance never misses us.
They keep passing though.
We keep running too.
Anywhere and everywhere
To get away from them

We are told rumors.
That our government will kill us
The rebels claim to be our saviors.
But, how can you be saviors?
When you murder and maim?
By raping our sisters,
stealing our brothers and
shooting our fathers,
you're contributing to the slaughter.

War serves no purpose.
It occurs all seasons.
By destroying generations
and bringing shame to all nations

You have honoured my contest with magnificent words of truth and defiance. I especially like the final stanza. Thanks for entering.

this is very powerful, i can feel the pain of the person in the village who has to watch these attrocities happen and is unable to stop them, people need protection from these sorts of things, not for the government to sanction this kind of senseless violence, great poem, best of luck in the contst

    You are correct.

Your analogy of war is correct, it makes no sense for us to do this to our fellow man. I daresay that anyone who kills and say that they are saviors will indeed face the wrath of God in the end. Their victims will have the kingdom. I wish the world peace among their brothers.
