The Art of Letting Go

Do not wish as if your hopes
Could reach a princess of the stars
Or ride chariots of white stallions atop
Clouds out of reach and lost afar

No castle awaits down the winding road
No maiden sweet and fair and pale,
Nor does Cupid strike his bow
Upon an inexistent fairytale.

And ‘tis not love to swoon and woo
With roses fresh from gardens sweet
And follow some fickle childish dream
To sweep a lady off her feet.

Sparks and hearts do not add up
To love’s equation, that never ends
But there remains still no answer to
A broken heart that seeks to mend.

So throw away those soulless books,
Tales of love of loving reverence.
Love’s but a fantasy that all hearts outgrow,
That fills a heart with hopeless innocence.

  • This is both beautiful and heartbreaking. Love is no illusion, my friend. Romantic love may at times be the most frustrating thing in the world. It will drive you crazy, and that is good. It's great to be so passionate about a person that you suffer because of their actions. It shows that your heart is young and vibrant, I think. I spent the past summer chasing after a young man who was absolutely worth the effort. And, who knows, maybe my efforts will harvest into something splendid one day. All I know is that the ability to love is a precious one. Also, you are 18 now. What an incredible age! Prepare for your heart to be broken, mended, and then broken again. And then when you think you have finally calmed your passions, you are going to meet someone else who throws you overboard, you're going to fall so madly in love with them. It's wonderful being young, my friend. I have watched you grow as a poet and have always been enamored of your spirit and words. Continue to write. You are incredible. And if you ever need anything, feel free to swing by anytime. Take care.

    MY OH MY

Wow the last poem of the contest and it is sure a great one! Wow you really tell it like it is with no punches pulled at all, and thats what I adore about this poem! i really love the whole poem but the last stanza and this one is what got me the best:

No castle awaits down the winding road
No maiden sweet and fair and pale,
Nor does Cupid strike his bow
    Upon an inexistent fairytale.

An inexsistent fairytale....wow now that is more painful than Cupid's arrow itself...great job, thanks for entering and good luck!!!
