Beyond the Dunes at Kitty Hawk

time in a bottle was about to become now,
an improbable reel of beginnings
in herky jerky black and white,
wind and sand unraveling the nature of the day

“Daddy, did they all walk that way back then?”
“No, sweetheart, that’s old movies of the first recorded flight.”
“How did they know how to do it?”
“Because nobody paid attention to them.”

flotsam and jetsam bits of December
the kree of gulls
in gambits high above the ground
waves bemoaning tidal passages
upon the shore

two brothers with  earthbound names
of Orvil and Wilbur
ran about the edges of the shore
and in and out of chldhood dreams
their hands extended with eager screams
touching and feeling the wind
until they found the easy place
when arms are held just so
the place of lift and thrust
where they could make a thing to go
it was a time that took them back
as far as discovery began
and forward to those who trust
beyond the dunes
the fullsome clouds
and more.

this day at Kitty Hawk

Author notes

I had become afraid that this poem was more a curiosity then anything else, so, I deleted it. After some reflection I decided to reinsert it. It is about the first powered flight of the Wright Brothers in December 1903, but it is also about inventiveness and creativity.

This was very well done, but the ending was just a little "ho hum" for something this well thought out. I really like the dialog in the middle. I thought it was a nice touch.

I agree, the ending needs a better lead in. Something else that I wished I could do is to capture the Laurel and Hardy and Hal Roach flavor of this whole thing. It is such a major moment but it was so low key. Thank you for some good feeback. I have made a light revision which I hope you will comment on.
