whirled on a string

Not since the haunted days of Dona Flor
had there been such a complete uproar
Rio was spinning out of control,
and tourists gathered, a global poll…

Tariza danced her spiked heels made sparks
Samba schools rocked to light up the dark

It was Samba drama, the old Swiss clockmaker,
his pacemaker like a wild cuckoo yelled “shake it...”
but his eyes glazed his mainspring couldn’t take it,
Belgian chocolates melted in sweaty palms,
homeless men offered up their precious alms

The Spaniard took it all in with a yawn, Barcelona
he’d seen, and run with the bulls at Pamplona
someone yelled hey you , “it’s not the way I swing”
who’s the guy next to her, the one with the string?

Englishman said holy God-iva, his wife covered eyes
the blind Bishop rubbed numb lids mumbling “thighs ..thighs…”
To prove he was no dope, called the Vatican, spoke to the Pope
We  need an atonement ...not for a day or two...I hope
the Bishop’s camera phone view
had his holiness sweating too
“I feel my chances at sainthood…slipping away” sigh
was all the he was heard to say,[  and “thighs …thighs..”]

Then the seas began to rise,
darkness spread across the skies
Tariza’s plight in Carnival night, aroused sleeping sprites
and whirling waters sprayed air and ground
buzzing blasting a frightening sound
but few paid any heed, all consumed with string indeed
most men had eyes for nothing more… drums and song
Tariza danced solo in Samba the whole night long

Gone with morning light and rest fell upon the City
‘til dusk and new costume, broad cloth… elasticity
from Cathedrals a dreary chant…the mores’ the pity
the mores’ the pity....
