To My Protagonists

Adele,
I can only hope that you accept this apology
I wish I gave you enough life for me to write your story
To capture your tender trepidation and your youthful optimism
I want to show your timid bravery for breaking the mold
The courage it took for you to lie to your father and mother
To live like a dead woman does
A ghost to all those who previously knew you
I feel sorry for the troubles I placed deliberately on your shoulders
And the childlike purity and innocence I stole from you
An angel with leaden boots
Condemned to death by all that you cannot obtain (the power, the hetero-normative status quo)
As much as you winged on within Sophie,
You breathed through my hands and my imagination
I wish your fate didn't dictate this destiny.

I put you and Sophie on a boat and pushed you out to sea
Where a storm and thunder caught beneath your sails
Either to fall asunder to the tumult, a lonely shipwreck
Or to be thrown overboard by the lerch of the vessel
I let both of you become overwhelmed in a corruption of your ideals

As your time ticks slowly away from me,
I hesitate to write your ending
His injustice becomes mine
And you die for nothing
Hoping that my crummy writing can bring dignity to your memories
Hoping that this preservation will make meaning of your destinies.
