Silent Generation

When alas,
from out of the mouths of babes

    ...comes nothing, but silence...

        we've only ourselves to blame.

"Children should be seen,
    and not heard" --

    a phrase often quoted,
    (if only in jest)

could one day forever ring true...

If their words are silenced,
their thoughts not allowed freedom,

we shall soon awaken

    to a world belonging to

    a silent generation --

    one seething with anger
    directed at older generation,

        ...one that won't speak out,
even to secure it's own future.

Lest we doom our children
to an existence of hate and regret,

if our little ones should request
    our attention,

        ...please, give it to them.

Excellent! You've penned this beautifully! I knew you would, too! Thanks for entering my contest and for writing for me. Good luck. It’s an honor to have you show your work here!

  • Amen to that.
Such a great message you deliver with a brilliant pen

If the young people in this day and age aren't allowed to speak up, it will be a great travesty to this world and it will "bite them in the butt" eventually.

    Great piece

  • I really like the message of this poem and you have written it so eloquently. I have never subscribed to the idea that children are best seen and not heard. My daughter is autistic, wish i could hear her more. This is beautiful.
