Impasse

We took solace
in the safety of virtue
to resist temptation.
Watched and waited,
until attraction worked
its force upon us
and left us weak
as we ache for the passion
and the love that we do not know.
We were soldiers of life
as we followed our destiny
yet we screamed silently
for more than what we deserved.
One by one as the leaves
of fate fell, we yearned
for exemption to be left
alone up in the tree,
where we could stay
until the winter of turmoil
passes by and spring would
hide us again from the world.
Are we no more than lost souls
unable to find our heart's home?
Are we banished
from the place of contentment
or should we choose
from righteousness and happiness?
Is there ever a choice?
What is one to do when the world
made us like this ?
