Invocation

Missing image
Bho an tír de Éirinn
Sruths a-mach a solas
Deálraich bho agus a-steach do
An inntinns de duine.

Leig firinn ríoghaich
Agus reusan treóraich
An cridhes agus anams
De uile de iad.

~

From the land of Éire
Streams forth a light
Shining from and into
The minds of men.

Let truth reign
And reason guide
The hearts and souls
Of all of them.

Author notes

Created and translated by Cynthia Gaines, using Hippocrane Practical Dictionary;
Gaelic-English, English-Gaelic Dictionary, compiled by Dougal Buchanan.

Invocation inspired by an excerpt from A Theachtaire Thig ón Róimh,
a poem protesting a planned prohibition of the filidh (poets):

Moladh Daoine Is Dó Is Moladh

Na filidh fréamhna a lubhguirt,
Ní bhiadh muna mbeith an dín,
Ag cruit théidbhinn ná ag tiompán.
Fios deighfhir ar n-a dhola,
Ná a einigh ná a eangnamha.
Fir Éireann, más é a rothol
Ionnarba na healathan,
Gach Gaoidheal budh gann a bhreath,
Gach saoirfhear ann budh aitheach.

Author: Giolla Brighde Mhac Con Midhe

Praise Of The People Is Praise Of The Creating Spirit

As roots in the herb garden poets grow,
If it weren't for us, there would be no Art
On the lute or the tunefully strung harp,
No knowledge of how nobles met their ends,
Of generous deeds, or war-skilled hands.
Men of Éire, till we escape
From this banishment of late,
Every Gael will lack beauty
And every noble be unfree.

English Translation: Maureen S. O'Brien

Ah, this is lovely and haunting.. I feel that old Irish blood rise up, bringing tears to my eyes.. My mother's mother, (bless her sweet soul) was Irish too, from her lovely red hair to her little toe.. (Would that I could have inherited that crowning glory of hers )..
But something struck me in the Gaelic version, how alike the words are to the Elvin language Tolkien uses in his MiddleEarth stories.. Me thinks I know now how he was able to create it..

      Thank you for stopping by!!

I really appreciate your stopping in to read my Irish Invocation, you made my day with you thoughtful comments!! This was my first attempt at English/Gaelic translation.

I also enjoyed reading your thoughts on the Gaelic language, and about your Irish family. You are so lucky to have known your Irish grandmother, I'll bet she told you some great stories about her homeland!!

My paternal grandmother was Irish, I wrote a poem on AP for her, "Bravest of the Brave" with her photo. She died young though, at age 30, when my father was only 5 years old. Unfortunately I never knew her, but my dad told me all about her from what he knew and remembered, and he said she had red hair. My dad's paternal line of ancestors were Welsh, and his paternal grandfather married a Cherokee woman, so we are an interesting mix.

My mother's ancestors were Scotch, English and French. I consider myself lucky that I inherited most of the Irish genes.

Thanks again for dropping in to read my work, and for the kudos!! I'm thinking of something to write on "Shoes" for Lemon Drop's 50th trophy contest... that should be a challenge, since it seems she is giving one trophy, and you'll most likely earn that one!! Take care & keep it flowing... Peace always, xx Cyn
